Practical community rankings for starters, grinders, ambushers, and apex fighters.

Dinosaur Tier List Hub

Prior Extinction puts roughly forty-five playable dinosaurs and paleo animals into weight-based playable tiers, from AI Tier below Tier 1 up through Tier 8. Heavier adults sit higher on that ladder, but meta strength is not the same thing as weight class. A fast Tier 2 pack hunter can dominate open trails while a slow Tier 7 herbivore farms Amber in peace. This hub explains how we rank playables for real servers, then links to focused lists for new players and combat specialists.

Use this page as the overview. For day-one picks, open the Beginner Tier List. For fight value, ambush windows, and pack pressure, read the Combat Tier List. Pair both with the Dinosaur Roster when you need niche labels, and check Updates Hub whenever Recode stress tests land.

How weight tiers work

Official playable tiers sort creatures by adult mass roughly like this:

Playable tierRough adult weight bandTypical feel
AI TierBelow Tier 1Tiny prey, insects, small fish, filler AI
Tier 1About 1–450 kgFast starters, small raptors, light herbivores
Tier 2–3Mid hundreds to ~2.9 tVersatile midgame hunters and tanks
Tier 4–5~2.9–8 tSerious PvP bodies and mid-apex threats
Tier 6–8~8 t to 50 t+Apex carnivores and mega herbivore grinders

Babies begin at Tier 1 even if the adult form is much heavier. Each growth stage below adult usually drops you one step on the ladder. Elder stages can push a species into the next band. That means a “Tier 6 adult” may feel like Tier 5 while growing, which matters for who can hunt you.

Meta ranking vs weight tier

Community S–C rankings on this wiki answer a different question: who is worth your Amber and playtime right now? Criteria include:

  • Survivability for solo players versus pack play
  • Amber and wellbeing efficiency for long sessions
  • Ambush and crouch value after Recode testing
  • Matchup strength against common mid and high tiers
  • Forgiveness for beginners who misread stamina or foliage

A long-neck herbivore such as Sauroposeidon has historically been an S-tier Amber grinder because passive rates and territory setups reward patience. Pack hunters and ambush carnivores climb when foliage stealth is strong. Pure tanks climb when bleed and face-tank fights decide nests. Recode movement and crouch rules can shuffle those placements, so every list below notes where the mid-2026 testing branch may change outcomes.

If you are brand new, prefer smaller and faster bodies or tanky mid herbivores before you buy a flashy apex. The Getting Started guide covers first-hour habits; this hub focuses on which species reward those habits.

Current S–C snapshot (community style)

These are practical server rankings, not weight tables. Exact order moves when abilities, maps, or Recode builds shift.

S tier — worth learning first for value

  • Sauroposeidon / long-neck grinders — historically elite Amber farmers with territory boosts and strong wellbeing loops.
  • Coordinated mid-tier packs (Deinonychus, Utahraptor, Allosaurus crews) — punish isolated growers and control trails.
  • Reliable mid tanks (Kentrosaurus, Sauropelta) — teach spacing and nest defense without apex-level cost.

A tier — strong when played to niche

  • Ambush specialists once crouch-to-transparency sticks in live Recode builds.
  • Versatile mid carnivores such as Ceratosaurus, Concavenator, and Carnotaurus for solo hunters who manage stamina.
  • Tanky ceratopsians and stegosaurs that hold nests and force fair trades.

B tier — solid but situational

  • Pure speedsters that win escapes but lose long face trades.
  • Semi-aquatic picks like Sarcosuchus or Spinosaurus when water lanes matter on the current map.
  • Heavy apexes that punish mistakes during growth more than they reward casual play.

C tier — fun or prestige, not default investments

  • Ultra-heavy vanity unlocks before you understand wellbeing.
  • Niche flyers or tiny AI-adjacent playables that struggle in crowded hotspots.
  • Species that require mastery gates you have not unlocked yet.

Recode caveat (mid-2026)

Recode testing highlighted a crouch-in-foliage ambush loop: hold crouch under cover for roughly ten seconds, gain transparency, then spend the ambush state on a short speed window and a strong first hit. That buffs ambush niches and forces herbivores to watch bush lines instead of only open water. Movement remakes, PvP tuning, and later flight or fall-damage phases can reshuffle mid tiers again. Track Updates Hub and the dedicated Recode Update page before you spend large Amber piles.

How to use these lists with the rest of the wiki

  1. Pick a niche from the table above.
  2. Confirm the species role on the Dinosaur Roster.
  3. Plan Amber spend with the Amber Planner.
  4. Claim free eggs and Amber from Codes or the Code Checklist.
  5. Review cosmetic targets on Eggs and Skins.
  6. Avoid risky executors; if you browse that topic, read the Scripts Hub safety notes first.

Online multiplayer packs remain the main co-op path. Solo players should overweight escape tools and grind niches; pack players can climb combat tiers faster because focus fire and nest watches multiply value.

Rankings here stay opinionated on purpose. Empty tables without reasoning do not help you survive a hot server. When a patch lands, we update reasoning first, then shuffle letters.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Prior Extinction on Roblox.

Is playable tier the same as meta tier?

No. Playable tiers are weight bands from AI Tier through Tier 8. Meta S–C ranks measure Amber value, survivability, ambush strength, and pack usefulness on live servers.

Which tier list should a new player open first?

Start with the Beginner Tier List for forgiving speed or tank herbivore picks, then use Combat Tier List after you understand stamina, wellbeing, and nest basics.

Will Recode invalidate these rankings?

It can shuffle mid and ambush niches especially. Crouch-to-transparency testing already rewards foliage play. Recheck Updates and the Recode page before big Amber spends.

Why do long necks rank so high for grinding?

Species like Sauroposeidon historically combine strong passive Amber potential with territory bonuses and safer wellbeing loops when you avoid apex hotspots.

Do packs change the tier list?

Yes. Pack hunters jump tiers when friends focus the same target. Solo players should prefer escape tools, mid tanks, or herbivore grinders instead.
